Fireground Radio That Keeps Every Crew Accountable
From career departments running P25 trunked systems to volunteer companies still dispatching by pager, VEI equips fire agencies with radios, pagers, and repeater infrastructure that hold up on the fireground and in the station.
Overview
Fireground communication failures have a direct body count. The NIFC and NFPA have documented dozens of firefighter fatalities where inadequate radio coverage or channel coordination was a contributing factor. VEI works exclusively with fire agencies that understand this reality and want a communications partner who takes it as seriously as they do. We are not a box-mover. We are the integrator your IC can call when coverage on Floor 4 disappears or your pager system stops reaching outlying stations. Volunteer departments face a specific budget pressure that career departments do not. A 20-person volunteer company cannot absorb a $200,000 infrastructure upgrade the way a city department can. VEI has built our consulting approach around realistic procurement timelines, state grant guidance, and phased upgrades that get the most critical gaps closed first. We help departments document their coverage deficiencies in a format that supports grant applications to FEMA SAFER, USDA Community Connect, and state homeland security programs. The paperwork we help you produce is also the engineering justification for the system we will build. On the equipment side, VEI is a Unication authorized dealer and service center. The G4 and G5 pager lines are the standard for fire dispatch in our region, and we handle programming, repairs, and fleet management for departments that run hundreds of units. We also stock and program portable radios from Motorola, Kenwood, and Harris for fireground operations, with configurations built specifically for firefighter accountability and PAR-check compliance.
How VEI Helps Fire Departments
Rural Pager Coverage Dead Zones
Outlying fire stations and volunteer responders in rural townships often sit outside the effective range of existing pager transmitters. VEI conducts drive-test surveys to map actual signal margins, then adds fill-in transmitters or upgrades antenna systems to eliminate coverage gaps that delay response times.
Fireground Accountability on Portable Radios
ICS requires every crew to maintain radio contact from point of entry to exit. VEI programs fireground channels with proper talk groups, ensures portable radios are set up for emergency alert button activation, and verifies that Mayday-capable configurations are tested before apparatus goes in service.
Mutual Aid Channel Programming and Patching
When a second or third alarm brings in departments from neighboring counties, mutual aid channels have to work without a technician on site to reprogram handhelds. VEI pre-programs mutual aid zones and tests interoperability with your neighboring agencies before you need it on a working fire.
Grant-Supported Equipment for Volunteer Departments
VEI assists volunteer departments with coverage documentation and equipment specifications formatted for FEMA SAFER, USDA, and state homeland security grant applications. We have helped departments secure funding for pager fleets, repeater upgrades, and portable radio replacements they could not otherwise afford.
Unication Pager Programming and Repair
As an authorized Unication dealer, VEI programs G4 and G5 pagers to your dispatch system's POCSAG format, manages fleet inventory, and performs factory-authorized repairs in-house rather than shipping units out for weeks. Loaner units are available for departments with critical gaps during repair cycles.
