Viking VM6000
The Viking VM6000 steps up from the VM5000 with a higher-resolution 480 x 128 pixel transmissive color display, P25 IP packet data support, Bluetooth standard, and an optional 2,048-channel configuration for larger agency deployments. P25 Link Layer Authentication adds a security layer not always standard on competing vehicle radios. Same 50-watt VHF output, AES-256, OTAR, GPS, and TrueVoice as the VM5000.
Overview
Command vehicles and supervisory units often have requirements that standard patrol vehicle radios don't meet: more channel capacity for complex multi-site zone structures, a higher-resolution display for better information density, and packet data capability for CAD integration. The VM6000 addresses all three without moving to the flagship VM7000.
The VM 6730 covers VHF at 136-174 MHz with 5-50 W. The VM 6830 covers UHF at 380-520 MHz at up to 45 W (Type 1) or 40 W (Type 2). The VM 6930 covers 700/800 MHz at 2-30 or 2-35 W. Channel capacity starts at 1,024 with a 2,048-channel option, across 255 zones. P25 IP packet data enables direct integration with CAD and mobile data systems over the P25 network without a separate data radio. P25 Link Layer Authentication provides network-level security verification beyond standard radio authentication.
The 480 x 128 pixel high-contrast transmissive LCD offers higher resolution than the VM5000 display and uses a transmissive panel type that performs better in direct sunlight than standard transmissive displays. Built-in Bluetooth adds wireless headset support in vehicle environments. Wi-Fi is included for OTIP programming. AES-256 FIPS 140-2 and OTAR, TrueVoice noise cancellation, built-in GPS, Instant Recording Replay, and MDC-1200/GE-Star signaling compatibility are standard. Remote mount with optional dual control heads is available. The radio weighs 3.44 lbs (VM 6730/6830) at 6.73 x 1.89 x 7.24 inches.
Key Features
480 x 128 High-Contrast Transmissive Display
The transmissive panel type maintains readability in high ambient light conditions, including direct sunlight in vehicle installations. Resolution steps up to 480 x 128 pixels over the VM5000's 422 x 154 panel, providing more horizontal screen real estate for channel names, status icons, and zone information displayed simultaneously.
P25 IP Packet Data
Native P25 IP packet data support enables integration with CAD systems and mobile data terminals over the same P25 radio channel, without a separate data modem or cellular module. This is particularly useful for agencies where radio and data infrastructure are managed by the same team and need to operate on a single network.
P25 Link Layer Authentication
Link Layer Authentication adds a network-level security verification step that goes beyond standard P25 radio authentication. This prevents spoofed or unauthorized radios from accessing the network even if they present a valid radio ID, providing protection that matters in multi-agency and public environments.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Standard
Bluetooth is built in on the VM6000 (not available on the VM5000) for wireless headset connectivity in vehicle installations. Wi-Fi is included for over-the-internet programming, allowing configuration updates to be pushed to the vehicle radio without cable connections or radio removal from the vehicle.
2,048-Channel Option
The optional 2,048-channel configuration doubles the standard 1,024-channel capacity for agencies with complex multi-site, multi-agency zone structures. Large metro agencies and regional communication authorities managing dozens of talkgroups across multiple systems often require this expansion to accommodate complete channel plans.
