Kenwood NX-5200 / NX-5300 / NX-5400

The NX-5000 series is Kenwood's most capable NEXEDGE portable, adding P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 to the NXDN and DMR support already found in the NX-3000 line. That means one radio can operate on virtually any digital public safety network in North America. A full-color transflective LCD, 4,000-channel capacity, microSD slot, and IP67/68 rating round out a platform that's genuinely built for public safety agencies and large enterprise operations.

Overview

Public safety agencies and large enterprise operations often have radios that need to talk across systems built on different protocols. Mutual aid, multi-agency incidents, and shared infrastructure all create the same problem: a radio locked to one CAI can't communicate with another. The NX-5000 series is designed specifically to eliminate that limitation.

The NX-5200 (VHF, 136-174 MHz, 6 W), NX-5300 (UHF, 380-520 MHz, 5 W), and NX-5400 (700/800 MHz, 3 W) each support P25 Phase 1 conventional and trunked, P25 Phase 2 TDMA trunked, NXDN Type-C Gen2, DMR Tier II, and FM analog. Any two digital protocols can run simultaneously alongside analog, in combinations of FM/DMR/NXDN, FM/NXDN/P25, or FM/DMR/P25. Channel capacity starts at 1,024 and expands to 4,000 via software license, across 128 zones with 512 channels per zone. A microSD slot supports up to 32 GB of on-device voice and data storage.

The 1.74-inch full-color transflective LCD with 240 x 180 pixel resolution and 65,536 colors is readable in direct sunlight and through polarized lenses. IP68 rating allows 2-hour immersion at 1 meter, with MIL-STD-810 C through G environmental certification. Built-in GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, man-down and stationary sensors, Active Noise Cancelling, and AES-256 encryption are all included. Operating range is -22 to 140 degrees F.

Key Features

P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2

Full P25 compliance covers both conventional and trunked modes, including Phase 2 TDMA which doubles channel capacity versus Phase 1 FDMA. The radio participates in P25 inter-agency interoperability without a gateway, and can simultaneously hold NXDN or DMR channels alongside P25 channels in the same zone.

Full-Color Transflective LCD

The 1.74-inch 240 x 180 pixel display renders 65,536 colors and uses a transflective panel that remains readable in direct sunlight without increasing backlight power. It's also legible while wearing polarized sunglasses, which eliminate most LCD displays in bright outdoor conditions. Multi-line text and colored status icons are displayed simultaneously.

AES-256 with FIPS Compliance

256-bit AES encryption is available via an optional module upgrade from the standard 56-bit DES. Encryption is configured per channel, allowing secure and non-secure talk groups to coexist in the same radio configuration. Compatible with P25 standard encryption implementations for inter-agency secure communications.

MicroSD Storage Up to 32 GB

An onboard microSD card slot supports cards up to 32 GB for voice recording, data logs, and configuration storage. This enables on-radio incident documentation without relying on a connected recording server, useful for law enforcement body-worn camera supplemental audio and EMS run documentation.

GPS and Bluetooth 3.0 Built In

Integrated GPS transmits positional data over P25, NXDN, or DMR networks and is compatible with KAS-20 fleet tracking software. Bluetooth 3.0 supports headset and serial port profiles. Neither feature requires an external module or cradle, keeping the radio compact at 58 x 139 mm with the standard battery.

IP67/68 Submersion Protection

IP68 rating covers 2-hour immersion at 1 meter depth. MIL-STD-810 C through G testing adds shock, vibration, salt fog, humidity, and extreme temperature certifications across the -22 to 140 degree F range. Man-down, stationary, and motion detection via embedded accelerometer and tilt sensor trigger automatic emergency alerts.
