Kenwood NX-3720HG / NX-3820HG

The NX-3720HG and NX-3820HG bring NXDN Gen2 trunking, DMR Tier II, and FM analog to the vehicle mount. Up to 50 watts on VHF and 45 watts on UHF, with integrated GPS, Bluetooth, and optional AES-256 encryption in a MIL-STD-810 chassis. An optional detachable front panel makes it adaptable to unusual vehicle configurations, and software licenses expand channel count from 512 to 1,000 without touching the hardware.

Overview

Vehicle-mounted radios in mixed-protocol environments face the same migration problem as portables: picking a protocol means potentially replacing hardware again when the network evolves. The NX-3720HG and NX-3820HG carry NXDN conventional and Gen2 trunking, DMR Tier II, and FM analog simultaneously, so the radio works on today's network and tomorrow's without a swap.

The NX-3720HG covers VHF at 136-174 MHz with 50/30/5 W output. The NX-3820HG covers UHF with two frequency variants: Type 1 at 450-520 MHz and Type 2 at 400-470 MHz, both at 45/30/5 W. NXDN Type-C Gen2 trunking links up to 1,000 sites and 24 networks. Standard channel count is 512, expandable to 1,000 via software license. Optional GPS accessory enables fleet tracking via KAS-20 software, and Bluetooth 3.0 supports headset and serial port accessories.

Active Noise Reduction uses single-microphone DSP to suppress background noise at a level normally requiring dual microphones. Man-down, stationary, and motion detection via embedded accelerometer and tilt sensor trigger automatic emergency alerts. Remote Stun, Kill, and Check manage the radio over the air. The IP54/55 chassis and MIL-STD-810 C through G rating handle the vibration, temperature swings, and moisture typical of vehicle installations. The front panel is optionally detachable for remote control head configurations.

Key Features

NXDN Gen2 Trunking and DMR Tier II

NXDN Type-C Gen2 trunking supports up to 1,000 sites and 24 networks, providing wide-area coverage for enterprise and government fleet deployments. DMR Tier II conventional operates on the same radio, so organizations running mixed-protocol infrastructure don't need separate vehicles or radio platforms.

Up to 50 Watts Output

The VHF NX-3720HG delivers 50 W at full power, 30 W at medium, and 5 W low. The UHF NX-3820HG outputs 45 W high, 30 W medium, and 5 W low. Three selectable power levels let operators reduce output on close-range channels to preserve repeater bandwidth and avoid overloading nearby receivers.

Integrated GPS for Fleet Tracking

Optional GPS (KRA-40G) transmits positional data and is compatible with Kenwood KAS-20 fleet management software. Location data is transmitted over NXDN or DMR networks without a separate data modem, making it practical for delivery, utility, and transportation fleets that need vehicle tracking without adding hardware to each unit.

Man-Down and Lone Worker

An embedded accelerometer and tilt sensor monitor for man-down, stationary, and motion states and trigger emergency alerts automatically. Lone Worker mode adds a timer-based auto-emergency for solo operators. Remote Stun, Kill, and Check let dispatch manage radios remotely, and an orange Emergency button provides immediate manual activation.

DES Standard, AES-256 Optional

Standard 56-bit DES encryption is included at no additional cost. An optional AES-256 module upgrades encryption for security, corrections, or government fleet applications. Encryption is configured per channel, so secure and non-secure talk groups can coexist in the same radio programming.

Detachable Front Panel Option

The front panel can function as a full remote control head when separated from the radio body. This is useful for specialized vehicle installations where the radio deck needs to be mounted in a trunk, utility box, or out-of-reach location while the control head stays on the dash within operator reach.
