Kenwood NX-3220 / NX-3320 / NX-3420
The NX-3000 series is where Kenwood's NEXEDGE platform gets serious: built-in GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, man-down detection, and AES-256 encryption alongside NXDN, DMR Tier III trunking, and FM analog. It covers VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz in three models that share the same form factor and accessories. IP67 submersion rating and MIL-STD-810 make it a credible choice for both enterprise fleets and public safety applications.
Overview
Enterprise fleets running across wide areas need more than a conventional repeater can offer. NXDN Gen2 trunking connects up to 1,000 sites and 24 networks, while DMR Tier III adds slot-efficient trunking with auto site roaming. Choosing between them used to mean choosing a radio platform. The NX-3000 series carries both protocols, plus FM analog, so the network decision doesn't lock you into a hardware decision.
The NX-3220 covers VHF at 136-174 MHz, the NX-3320 covers UHF across a full 120 MHz range at 400-520 MHz, and the NX-3420 handles 700/800 MHz. All deliver 5 W on VHF/UHF, with 260 channels and 128 zones standard, expandable to 1,000 channels via software license. Built-in GPS transmits positional data compatible with Kenwood KAS-20 fleet tracking software. Bluetooth 3.0 supports headset and serial port profiles for hands-free operation and accessory connectivity. Standard DES-56 encryption is included; optional AES-256 is field-upgradable.
The IP67 rating is genuine: 30 minutes at 1 meter depth when equipped with the 2-pin connector cover, meeting MIL-STD-810 C through G. An embedded accelerometer and tilt sensor trigger man-down, stationary, and motion detection alerts, with Lone Worker adding a timer-based auto-emergency backup. Active Noise Reduction provides single-microphone noise suppression equivalent to dual-mic systems. The 7-color top-panel LED is individually configurable per channel, and the dot-matrix LCD handles 4-line basic and 5-line text message frames.
Key Features
NXDN Gen2 and DMR Tier III Trunking
NXDN Type-C Gen2 trunking links up to 1,000 sites or 24 networks with enhanced performance over original Type-C. DMR Tier III adds auto slot selection and site roaming for wide-area DMR deployments. Both protocols coexist on the same radio, and zones can mix digital and analog channels in any configuration.
Built-In GPS Tracking
An integrated GPS module and antenna transmit positional data directly from the radio. Coordinates are compatible with Kenwood KAS-20 fleet tracking software and can be relayed over both NXDN and DMR networks. No external GPS accessory or cradle is required for basic fleet location services.
Bluetooth 3.0 Standard
Bluetooth is built in, not an optional module. It supports Headset Profile (HSP) for wireless earpieces and Serial Port Profile (SPP) for data accessories and IoT device connectivity. Pairing and profile management are handled via the radio menu, with no additional hardware required.
Man-Down and Safety Sensors
An embedded accelerometer and tilt sensor detect man-down, stationary, and motion states and trigger emergency alerts automatically when abnormal conditions are detected. Lone Worker adds a timer-based auto-emergency for workers who don't respond to periodic check-ins. Orange emergency button on top panel is configurable.
AES-256 Encryption
Standard 56-bit DES encryption is included. An optional module upgrades to 256-bit AES for government, corrections, and security applications requiring the highest grade of communications protection. Encryption is configured per channel, not per radio, so secure and non-secure channels coexist in the same zone.
IP67 Submersion Rating
With the 2-pin connector cover installed, the radio meets IP67: 30 minutes at 1 meter. Without the cover it rates IP54/55. MIL-STD-810 C through G testing covers the full range of shock, vibration, humidity, and temperature extremes from -22 to 140 degrees F. Three battery options extend runtime from 8.5 to 25 hours depending on mode.
