Icom IC-F5220D / IC-F6220D
The IC-F5220D and IC-F6220D put NXDN-based IDAS digital on the vehicle mount, with multi-site conventional and trunking modes plus roaming scan that finds a new site if signal drops. VHF models run 50 watts, UHF models 45 watts, across 128 channels and 8 zones, backed by a 4-watt cabin speaker. A die-cast aluminum chassis tested to MIL-STD-810 G and optional external GPS make it a fit for fleet and utility vehicles migrating to digital.

Fleets running analog VHF or UHF mobiles hit a wall when coverage gaps and call clarity start costing time and safety, but a full digital trunking buildout feels like a public-safety budget line, not something a utility crew or delivery fleet can justify. Multi-site coverage is the hard part: a radio has to track which site has the best signal as a vehicle drives out of range, without a dispatcher babysitting every call.
The IC-F5220D (VHF, 136-174 MHz) and IC-F6220D (UHF, multiple bands from 350 to 520 MHz) answer with NXDN CAI-based IDAS digital mode, compatible with IDAS multi-site conventional and both multi-site and single-site trunking. Output power runs 50W/25W/5W on the VHF F5220D and 45W/25W/4.5W on the UHF F6220D, across 128 channels and 8 zones with channel spacing down to 6.25 kHz. When signal quality drops mid-call, roaming scan finds a new trunking site to hold the link. It also carries up to 500 individual and 500 group ID aliases, CTCSS/DTCS encode/decode, and a 4-watt front-facing speaker that stays clear at the fringes of coverage.
Built around a die-cast aluminum chassis with a polycarbonate front panel, the F5220D/F6220D series is tested to MIL-STD-810 G and weighs 1.1kg (2.4lb) at 150x40x167.5mm. An optional external GPS receiver connects through the accessory port alongside ignition sense, external PTT, and horn honk control, and power-on password plus time-out timer and lockout penalty add operational control. If signal quality worsens as a vehicle moves, roaming scan automatically finds a new trunking site to hold the communication link and quality. Supports up to 500 individual and 500 group ID aliases per site mode.
50W VHF / 45W UHF Output
The VHF F5220D delivers 50W, 25W, or 5W (Hi/L2/L1); the UHF F6220D delivers 45W, 25W, or 4.5W. Both cover 128 channels across 8 zones with channel spacing down to 6.25 kHz.
4-Watt Cabin Speaker
The front-facing speaker outputs 4W typical at 5% distortion into a 4-ohm load, delivering loud, clear audio through the vehicle cabin. Digital modulation keeps audio distinct even at the fringes of coverage.
MIL-STD-810 G Rugged Chassis
A die-cast aluminum chassis and polycarbonate front panel are tested to MIL-STD-810 G environmental standards. The radio weighs 1.1kg (2.4lb) at 150x40x167.5mm.
Optional GPS and Accessory Control
An external GPS receiver connects via the optional OPC-2078 or OPC-1939 cable through the ACC port, alongside ignition sense, external PTT, serial I/O, horn honk, and public address functions. Power-on password, time-out timer, and lockout penalty add operational security.
