Overview
Crews running older analog fleets face a hard choice: rip out working radios for a full digital upgrade, or keep tolerating dead zones and no encryption. Budget rarely allows a same-day fleet swap, and safety features like lone worker alerts and man down detection get pushed to "next year" while incidents keep happening on the ground.
The IC-F3400D runs NXDN conventional and NXDN Type-D trunking (with the ISL-UGMTR license key) alongside plain analog on VHF 136-174 MHz, so a crew can bring digital radios onto an existing analog channel and swap over department by department. It ships in NXDN or dPMR versions, steps output power at 1W, 2W, and 5W, and holds 1024 channels across 128 zones, expandable to 4000 channels with the ISL-CHEX option. Built-in GPS, Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and USB round out the programming and tracking side, with 4-key DES encryption standard and AES available through the UT-134 option.
At 215 grams bare and about 340 grams with the BP-284 battery, MB-133 clip, and antenna, it stays a genuine all-shift carry. The IC-F3400D is rated IP68 for dust-tight and waterproof protection, tested to MIL-STD-810G, and rated to run from -30°C to +60°C (-22°F to +140°F). The IC-F3400D runs NXDN conventional, NXDN Type-D trunking, and analog on the same channel, so a fleet can move from analog to digital in stages instead of all at once. Multi-site conventional lets the radio search out the optimal repeater automatically as a crew moves across a coverage area.
Encryption & Radio Kill
4-key DES encryption comes standard, with 64-key DES and AES available through the optional UT-134 module, plus over-the-air rekeying (OTAR) to update keys without touching the radio. If a unit is lost or stolen, Radio Kill disables it remotely, and Stun/Revive locks it out until a password or Revive command is received.
Lone Worker & Man Down Safety
Man down, motion/stationary detection, and lone worker functions monitor the operator automatically and send an emergency signal the moment something looks wrong. No manual button press is required to trigger the alert.
IP68 & MIL-STD-810G Build
The IC-F3400D is rated IP68 for dust-tight and waterproof protection and tested to MIL-STD-810G, plus equivalent C, D, E, and F specs, covering shock, vibration, humidity, and temperature extremes from -30°C to +60°C. The AquaQuake draining function clears water from the speaker grille after submersion.
GPS, Bluetooth & USB Connectivity
Built-in GPS reports position with voice or status calls for third-party AVL tracking, and Bluetooth pairs with headsets like the 3M Peltor WS 5 series for hands-free operation. A USB port and microSD slot handle programming and store up to 500 hours of call recordings on a 32GB card.
Color Display & Programming
A color LCD with a night mode setting stays readable in direct sun and low light, and Over-the-Air Programming (OTAP) pushes configuration updates to the fleet without pulling radios in for reprogramming.
